Okay, so I know this news is a little old. But I don’t live, eat, and poop inside the Internet, so it’s news to me.
So—Mass Effect. It’s a pretty sharp-looking game, right? Made by some pretty sharp folks at a pretty sharp company called Bioware. They’ve made some really good games in the past few years, chief among them being Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (game of the year 2003, anyone?) and Jade Empire (cruelly, cruelly overlooked by many people).

Anyway, nobody knows when Mass Effect is supposed to come out. Except, of course, for the fine people at Bioware and the filthy rich rich-minded people at Microsoft. Apparently, it’s like one of those games where you try and guess how many jellybeans are in the jar, except in this case, you guess how many days until Mass Effect gets released. Stuffed animal prizes not included.
So, while we’re all sitting around and thinking like a bunch of Greek philosophers, we get a bone thrown at us in the form of a Mass Effect novel. Behold:

Hot.
Anyway, the really cool part is that you can read the first chapter here. It’s actually written very well, unlike some other video game-based novels I’ve read (Halo: The Flood, I’m looking at you). If you like sci-fi books, chances are you’ll get sucked in within the first few pages. I know I sure did. And, if you’re a Mass Effect fan…well, you’ve probably already got the book. It came out May 1st as a mass-market paperback, and your local bookstore of choice should have it in stock. I’ll probably hit Borders or whatever this weekend and check it out.
Ooh—and here’s something very interesting:

The release date listed for the Mass Effect player’s guide is August 27th, 2007 (y’know…in case you can’t read the above image). Could this mean that the game is secretly slated for an August release, too? They’ve been awfully hush-hush about it, and all we know is that it’s supposed to come out “sometime in the summer.” August counts as summer.
Bummer. I’m really gunning for a June release.
